Is Competitive Sport Good for Young Children?

The Paris Olympics got me thinking about sport. Specifically, competitive sport and how it benefits young children. I was not encouraged to play sport until High School and by then I did not have the confidence to participate. But what if I had been encouraged to play sport at a young age?  Maybe I could have an unexplored talent? Maybe I could have been an Olympian  - I guess we will never know :-)

At Eduplay Childcare we have been talking a lot about the Olympics and the children were excited to try out some events.

The question we are exploring today...

Is competitive sport good for your child?

Health

Regular participation in sport helps children build strong muscles, improve cardiovascular health, and maintain a healthy weight. Early involvement in physical activities fosters lifelong habits of fitness.

Relationships

Competitive sports teach children how to work as part of a team, communicate effectively, and develop friendships. Through sports, they learn to respect others, share responsibilities, and appreciate the value of collaboration - skills that are essential both on and off the field. Understanding that competition is not just about rivalry but about pushing each other to do better helps children build strong, supportive relationships with peers. Fair play teaches children the importance of honesty, respect, and fairness, fostering a positive environment where everyone can thrive.

Confidence

Competition introduces children to winning and losing, helping them develop emotional resilience. Learning to handle both victory and defeat gracefully builds confidence, teaches humility, and encourages a growth mindset where challenges are seen as opportunities to improve. Children learn to view setbacks as opportunities for growth, developing the confidence needed to face challenges in other areas of life.

Goal Setting and Achievement

Sports provide children with the opportunity to set goals, whether it’s improving their skills, winning a game, or simply doing their best. Achieving these goals, even on a small scale, instils a sense of accomplishment and motivates them to pursue other objectives with determination and confidence. Focusing on self-improvement rather than just winning encourages children to strive for their personal best, leading to continuous personal development.

As you can see there are many benefits to participating in competitive sport from a young age.

It’s never too young to start!
